UN unveils new measures to combat Ebola crisis in DR Congo

A minister of the troubled east region of DR Congo announces a "resurgence" of Ebola, saying a woman has died of the disease just three months after authorities declared the end of the country's latest outbreak.

Locals were seen mourning their deaths on Monday, after at least 13 civilians and three soldiers were killed during an attack on the village of Ndalya, in Democratic Republic of Congo's north-eastern Ituri province, on Sunday. Our guest is Paulin Basinga, Director of Health, Africa for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He says the "resilience" of people and health programmes in place across Africa mean both Ebola and the coronavirus can and will be tackled. Basinga spoke to us as Guinea is dealing with a new outbreak of Ebola which has caused at least six deaths and as many other African countries are still dealing with Covid-19. He says the experience of tackling a variety of health issues means the continent has an advantage in knowing how to treat and contain such problems.

Six people have died of the Ebola virus in DR Congo's eastern province of North Kivu in recent months. UNICEF is cautiously optimistic that virus has been brought under control from a vaccine developed by Merck.
