Turning organic waste into renewable energy

Orkney: A renewable energy revolution.

The people at the foot of the Rwenzori glacier in Uganda want a switch to renewable energy to save the snow on the mountaintop, which is melting fast. Their goal: 100 percent green energy by 2020. Will they succeed?

According to the World Energy Outlook 2017, some 588 million people in sub-Saharan Africa—more than half of the region's population did not have access to electricity in 2016.

Engineers at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka have constructed a system that turns organic waste into a gas that can power a generator. They say their idea has the potential to solve the country's energy problems.

The world "missed a historic chance for a clean energy recovery", warns the sustainable energy network REN21. Despite growing investment, clean energy still lags behind fossil fuels when it comes to powering homes and businesses. FRANCE 24's Kate Moody talks to REN21's Executive Director Rana Adib.

This process, known as fluidization is very efficient at converting food waste into high-valuable sources of energy-rich synthesis gas, a mixture of hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, also called syngas. Syngas can be used to generate heat and power.

A report by the International Energy Agency says energy insecurity amid war in Ukraine is spurring a renewable power surge. Experts predict the sector will soon surpass coal as the world's largest electricity source.
