Medical officials say depression and suicide rates are on the rise in Uganda

Butabika Hospital which is Uganda's national referral hospital for mental illness has indicated that of the about 900 inpatients, 20 to 30 percent are depressed and 40 to 50 percent of the outpatients suffer depressive illnesses. Uganda has less than 50 professional psychiatrists.
