Young Sudanese react to the signature of transition deal

The UN refugee agency has advised governments not to return people to Sudan amid an ongoing conflict there. Meanwhile, Arab ministers will meet in Cairo this weekend to discuss the fighting.

A United Nations internal estimate predicts Sudan's crisis will see five million more people needing emergency aid, just as vital international funding for U.N. humanitarian appeals is dropping off.

More than 604 people, including civilians, have been killed, and thousands more injured, a UN agency said. The toll climbs as talks between warring parties continue in Saudi Arabia.

The United Nations humanitarian response plan is seeking $2.56 billion to help people affected by the crisis in Sudan, a senior U.N. official said on Wednesday, while the U.N. refugee agency is also seeking more funding to assist those forced to flee.

The revised response plan is up from around $1.75 billion a few months ago as the United Nations estimates more than 1 million people will flee Sudan this year.

While the majority of people have been displaced internally, hundreds of thousands have fled to neighboring countries too. Meanwhile, the army chief has fired his former ally turned rival from the Sovereignty Council.
