Uganda lifts Ebola-related lockdown

After two months of restrictions, 142 cases of the virus and 56 related deaths, Uganda is now lifting its Ebola lockdown while continuing to stay on high alert.

Located on Lake Victoria in East Africa, Migingo is the most densely populated island in the world. Covering an area smaller than a football pitch, the tiny island is home to several hundred people from Uganda and Kenya. Both countries have territorial claims on this piece of land located near the Kenyan coast, which has valuable fishing rights. Ugandans, who make up around a third of the population, cohabit with Kenyans, under the watchful eye of police from both nations. On 21 August 2022, the Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced that a new laboratory-confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) had been detected in a 46-year-old woman living in the city of Beni, in the province of North Kivu.
