Sierra Leone's President, Julius Maada Bio, announces the abolition of the death penalty during a ceremony in Freetown after lawmakers approved the bill to abolish the capital punishment in July. Sierra Leone, which is still recovering after decades of civil war, had frequently come under fire from rights groups for keeping capital punishment on the books. Ninety-four people were living under a death sentence at the end of 2020, according to deputy minister of justice Umaru Napoleon Koroma.

Bar owner Mohamed Lamin Mansaray told everyone to run away from his bar just before a fuel tanker exploded following a traffic collision, killing at least 99 people and injuring hundreds more on Friday (November 5) in Sierra Leone. The explosion destroyed Mansaray's business killing a staff member and destroying his home, which he had built for himself and his 10 family members. "We are getting into festive season....I have just purchased a brand new musical set, lots of drinks from the Sierra Leone brewery and chairs that worth about Le 270,000,000 (24,700 USD). Property that I have lost and one of my staff died”, said Mansaray while pointing at what is left of his business.

Five persons have lost their lives while a number of persons yet to be ascertained injured in a gas explosion at Odekunle Street, Papa Ajao, Mushin, Lagos, on Tuesday morning.⁣⁣ The fire incident was said to have been caused by a woman frying bean cake (Akara) close to a gas cylinder.⁣ Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene of the explosion.⁣⁣

At least one person was killed and six people including children injured in an explosion in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Wednesday, according to an official statement. Local media says the gas cylinder blast happened in a multi-story building in Lyari area the city. The police said the building was partially damaged.
