Nine dead in Equatorial Guinea following Marburg virus outbreak

Equatorial Guinea has confirmed its first outbreak of the Marburg virus, a highly infectious and deadly disease similar to Ebola, following the deaths of at least nine people, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.

The risk of spread of the lethal Marburg disease, detected in Guinea, is 'high' according to Dr Matshidiso Moeti. West Africa's first recorded case of the virus -- which belongs to the same filovirus family as Ebola but is somewhat less deadly -- was confirmed on August 9. The virus, which is carried by bats and has a historic fatality rate of up to 88 percent, was found in samples taken from a patient who died on August 2 in Guinea's southern Gueckedou prefecture.

This nine-year-old Nigerian boy has been declared cancer-free after readers of two UK newspapers raised £216,000 for his treatment. Nathaniel Nabena had gone to the UK from his hometown in Bayelsa, Nigeria, in September 2020 to get a prosthetic eye after his left eye was removed due to cancer.

The Pharaohs of Egypt claimed the enormous scalp of the Ivory Coast as they won their last 16 clash on spot kicks 5-4 in Douala on Wednesday evening. Eric Bailly missed the crucial spot kick for the Elephants while star man, Mohamed Salah converted to send his team through. The second game was almost a carbon-copy with no goals scored over 120 minutes between Mali and Equatorial Guinea. But it was the Northern Thunder who won 6-5 on penalties after Mali's, Falaye Sacko had his effort saved.
