Millions of Kenyans indebted to mobile app lenders

Loans through mobile apps have skyrocketed in Kenya. While this fintech industry provides easy-to-access credits, it has become a nightmare. Experts fear the largely unregulated market could lead to a credit crisis.

Kenyans rush to swap old 1,000 shilling banknotes as the Central Bank of Kenya-imposed ban on all old edition 1,000 shilling notes comes into force. A new print of the 1,000 shilling banknote, the largest denomination, was rolled out in June, with Kenyans given until today to exchange their old bills at the bank or else be stuck with bundles of useless cash.

Since September, the name Evergrande has caused panic on stock exchanges around the world. Paralysed by $300 billion in debt (€260 billion), or the equivalent of 2 percent of Chinese GDP, the country's second-largest real estate developer is now threatening Chinese growth. Evergrande has more than 1,300 construction projects across China, as well as financial products, electric cars, livestock, bottled water and even a football club.
