Blaise Compaoré had been in exile since 2014 when he was ousted from power by a military coup. He's set to attend a summit on Burkina Faso's future with a number of other former leaders. Several armored vehicles of the presidential fleet, stained with blood and riddled with bullets, could be seen near the president's residence on Monday morning after reports emerged that Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore had been detained at a military camp by mutinying soldiers.
It was not immediately clear if Kabore was in the vehicle when the attack took place but residents of the president's neighborhood reported heavy gunfire overnight.

Representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Monday met with the ousted President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Kabore. Prior to the meeting there had been no information about the whereabouts or condition of the former leader. While the delegation did not reveal where the meeting with Korbare took place, the head of the mission, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, said he was in good health.
