Exiled former president Blaise Compaoré has returned home to Burkina Faso

Blaise Compaoré had been in exile since 2014 when he was ousted from power by a military coup. He's set to attend a summit on Burkina Faso's future with a number of other former leaders. Several armored vehicles of the presidential fleet, stained with blood and riddled with bullets, could be seen near the president's residence on Monday morning after reports emerged that Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore had been detained at a military camp by mutinying soldiers. It was not immediately clear if Kabore was in the vehicle when the attack took place but residents of the president's neighborhood reported heavy gunfire overnight.

The decision was taken during a virtual extraordinary summit of heads of state of the bloc, held on Friday, January 28, 2022.

France says nearly 60 fighters from Islamist militias were killed in the days leading up to the coup. The jihadists were killed by forces involved with Operation Barkhane led by France.

Representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Monday met with the ousted President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Kabore. Prior to the meeting there had been no information about the whereabouts or condition of the former leader. While the delegation did not reveal where the meeting with Korbare took place, the head of the mission, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, said he was in good health.

Senegal is set to face Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday. Both teams held training sessions in Yaounde on Tuesday as they prepare for a battle to reach the final. Senegal coach Aliou Cisse said it was high time Senegal bring home some hardware adding that he thinks his team has the talent to do so.

Ex-leader Blaise Compaore is on trial for the 1987 murder of Thomas Sankara, a revered revolutionary leader. Sankara's death coincided with a coup that installed Campaore in power for 27 years.

The French army on Saturday said it killed 40 militants in Burkina Faso. According to a statement posted on Twitter, the militants were "neutralized" during a joint operation with Burkinabe armed forces. The statement went on to say that the armed "terrorist group" was responsible for two attacks in neighboring Benin.
