Burkina Faso urged to avoid curbs on security reporting

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged Burkina Faso's government to nix a bill that would impose stiff prison sentences on reporters for "demoralizing" security services battling a strengthening jihadist insurgency.

Representatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Monday met with the ousted President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Kabore. Prior to the meeting there had been no information about the whereabouts or condition of the former leader. While the delegation did not reveal where the meeting with Korbare took place, the head of the mission, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, said he was in good health.

Both teams held training sessions in Yaounde on Tuesday as they prepare for a battle to reach the final. According to a statement posted on Twitter, the militants were "neutralized" during a joint operation with Burkinabe armed forces. FRANCE 24 sat down with Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's deputy prime minister and minister of digital transformation. The ministry was created in 2019 because President Volodymyr Zelensky had promised that Ukraine would be a pioneering e-government. Since the Russian invasion, digital transformation has been put on a "war footing", Fedorov said. He told FRANCE 24's Gulliver Cragg about several projects: a chatbot that allows people to send information about the movements of the Russian army, a joint project on drones with the Ukrainian military, as well as the use of artificial intelligence for facial recognition. The latter includes identifying slain Russian soldiers and informing their families via social media.
