Azerbaijan: Exit polls show ruling party strengthens control

Dozens of people gather in front of a military recruitment centre in Baku after Azerbaijan declares martial law and curfews in several cities after Nagorny Karabakh, a breakaway region of Azerbaijan mainly inhabited by Armenians, has become the scene of deadly clashes.

Azerbaijan and Armenian forces have resumed fighting in a major eruption of their decades-old conflict. Russia says its military is closely watching, while France and Turkey trade barbs as tension mounts.

Scores of soldiers were killed in heavy clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces despite calls for a ceasefire. The two sides continued to attack each other with rockets and missiles.

Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of targeting a historic cathedral in Nagorno-Karabakh. Two Russian journalists were injured in the shellings. Azerbaijan rejected the allegations, saying it did not target religious sites.

With Azerbaijani forces preparing to take back this district on Tuesday, the 67-year-old is rushing to bring 30 animals more than 55 kilometres (35 miles) to the town of Goris across the border in Armenia.

Russian peacekeepers have been on the ground in Nagoro-Karabakh in a bid to get a Moscow-brokered ceasefire to hold. Armenia is yet to comment on the claims.

Rebels attacked polling stations following presidential elections on Sunday. Meanwhile, officials found that over 14% of voting centers did not operate after attacks on voters and poll staffers.

The leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan are in Moscow for their first meeting since a Russia-brokered deal ended hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
