With a 3-1 victory over Sudan, Nigeria's Super Eagles secure their slot in the knockout stages and gain status as a tournament frontrunner. Favorites Egypt meanwhile gets their first win thanks to star striker Mohamed Salah and after a goal from Guinea-Bissau was disallowed after VAR review. The Pharaohs played a goalless draw with the Elephants of Ivory Coast in Douala but went on to win after a penalty shoot-out. The seven-time champions are still on course to stretch their record.

Key suspect Salah Abdeslam has claimed that he bears no responsibility for the 130 people who were killed in the Paris terror attacks of November 2015. His testimony, during a terse exchange with magistrates, drew anger from survivors and their families, who've also been criticising the decision by defence lawyers to stage a walkout during Tuesday’s hearing. Liverpool forward Sadio Mane said he will listen to the Senegalese people while deciding his future at the Premier League club amid speculation that he could leave Anfield with just a year remaining on his current contract. Mane, who has been linked with a move to German champions Bayern Munich, earlier said that he would announce a decision following last weekend's Champions League final against Real Madrid, which Liverpool lost 1-0.

All 20 defendants were convicted for their roles in the 2015 Paris terror attacks. The main defendant was sentenced to life in prison. The highly anticipated verdict brings to an end a case that lasted over nine months.

Sadio Mane was named African Footballer of the Year on Thursday after a season in which he kicked the winning penalty for Senegal as they claimed their first Africa Cup of Nations title and repeated the feat when they secured World Cup qualification.
