Who’s that girl on the Cannes red carpet? You may well ask

France’s Julia Ducournau became only the second female director to win a Palme d’Or for her brazen thriller “Titane” as the 74th Cannes Film Festival wrapped up with a bang on Saturday, having successfully pulled off the first full-scale film festival of the Covid era.

The Cannes Film Festival has announced the official selection for its 75th edition, which kicks off on May 17. FRANCE 24's Olivia Salazar-Winspear flags up some of the familiar faces who’ll be competing for this year's Palme d'Or, as well as some of the celebrities who will be gracing the red carpet. We also take a look at how the festival is handling features from Ukrainian and Russian artists.

The 75th Cannes Film Festival has opened with the movie "Final Cut". Directed by France's Michel Hazanavicius and starring his partner Bérénice Bejo as well as Romain Duris, it's a film within a film inspired by a Japanese zombie movie. Bérénice Bejo tells FRANCE 24 why her partner didn't want her to be in the film and how some of the blood on set was actually real.

As the 75th Cannes Film Festival gets underway, FRANCE 24's Olivia Salazar-Winspear brings us a glimpse of what its opening ceremony will involve, including a Palme d’Honneur for Forest Whitaker. Olivia Salazar-Winspear tells us about Philippe Faucon’s "Les Harkis", which is screening in the Director's Fortnight selection. Set in 1959, it shines a light on the Algerian men who were enlisted to fight for the French Army in units known as Harkis and explores the repercussions they faced as a newly independent Algeria emerged from a deeply traumatic war of independence.

He's probably the most awaited director at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Dissident filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov is the only Russian with a film in the official selection. In previous years, Russia banned him from going to Cannes. Now in exile in Berlin, his film "Tchaikovsky’s Wife" is competing for the top prize. Eve Jackson speaks to him about what it means to be there in person, why his film is not about Tchaikovsky's homosexuality and why it's important to defend Russian culture.

The crude satire exploring notions of beauty and privilege won its director one of cinema's most prestigious prizes for the second time. Other films to win top honors include "Close" and "Stars at Noon."
