Thousands crowd the beach in the English coastal town of Bournemouth to soak up the sun on the hottest day of the year as lockdown measures are slowly eased -- but with officials still warning of another surge in COVID-19 cases.

Newcastle United have appointed former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe as their new head coach on a three-year contract following the departure of Steve Bruce last month, the Premier League club said on Monday.
"Newcastle United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Eddie Howe as the club's new head coach on a contract until summer 2024," the club said in a statement.

The death toll from Madagascar's latest cyclone rose to 29 on Tuesday (February 8) as residents of a devastated coastal town tried to fix their homes or build temporary shacks from wood and palm fronds scattered by the violent winds. Cyclone Batsirai slammed into the Indian Ocean island late on Saturday, battering the southeastern coastline until it moved away late on Sunday, leaving 91,000 people with damaged or destroyed homes, according to the state disaster relief agency.

Until now, workers have been striking at three sites, one each for Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.
