Also, African ministers of education were in Paris on Thursday for a UNESCO summit on tackling the devastating effect that the pandemic has had on education.

South Africa's president calls for a crackdown on the illegal sale of alcohol to underage drinkers, as a thousand mourners turn out for the funeral of the 21 teenagers who died mysteriously in a night club. Also in the programme: protests calling for the restoration of civilian rule continue in Sudan. Uruguayan soccer star Luis Suarez was unveiled as a Nacional club player on Sunday, a return to his footballing roots. Former Liverpool and Barcelona forward Suarez rejoined the Montevideo-based team on a free transfer, returning to the club where he started his professional career in 2005.

Many of the Conservative-supporting papers focus on Truss's message that she will "deliver" as the country reels from a series of crises. One tabloid, the Daily Star, calls this the "end of an error", referring to Johnson's hapless hold on power. Another tabloid, the Labour-supporting Daily Mirror, dismisses Truss's leadership victory as just the "same old Tories".

In spite of their difficult colonial past, India and Pakistan had a cordial relationship with Queen Elizabeth II. She is seen as a monarch who pursued the policy of "noninterference" during her 70-year-reign as queen.
